TRADITIONAL BALINESE MARKETS

Kuta Art Market
Located in the heart of Kuta, the Kuta market has different kind of shops selling surfer wear, handicraft, sarongs, leather goods, etc... Most of the products sold there can also be purchased in bulk, as they are mass produced; some coming from Java and China. The sale prices are never posted so must learn to bargain if you want a good deal.

Sanur
Most of the shops in Sanur are in Jl Danau Tamblingan. The shops there mostly sell the same kind of products that are found in Kuta, but the Sanur area is less crowded, and is more convenient for those who prefer a more serene environment.

Sukawati Art Market
Sukawati Art Market is the biggest market in Bali for handicrafts and traditional handmade products, and is located on the main road of Jl. Raya Sukawati, Gianyar. This two-floor building, usually packed full with tourists and locals, sells everything from paintings, statues, traditional woven textiles, traditional kites, local essential oils and incense, handmade bags, women's accessories, shirts, sarongs and Balinese ceremonial items (made from colourful 'Prada' - gold painted cloth); all at very reasonable prices.

Ubud Market
Ubud Market is located directly opposite Ubud Palace. The market structure is similar to the market in Sukawati, but on a much smaller scale. You can find the same range of products there, with some other additional products that are more modern in variation.

BALINESE VILLAGES

Batubulan
Batubulan is the village to visit for stone carving. Traditionally, stone sculptures carved from soft volcanic rock, are used for temples and palaces. Here, mostly the young, can be seen creating and carving sculptures of guardians for temple gateways, divinities and demons from Balinese mythology. You will also find small shrines, garden lamps, wall plaques with relief work, modern design concepts, and many more.

Celuk
Further along the road towards Ubud, is the village of Celuk; a village famous for its gold and silversmiths. The village offers a multitude of gold and silver jewellery including earrings, rings, bangles, chokers, and many other accessories.

Tegallalang
Tegallalang is located on the outskirts of Ubud. Here, most shops produce and sell figurines carved from softwood. Brightly painted signboards, flowers, fruits, frogs, cats, ducks, and animal figures can all be found here. Other shops there sell furniture and handicrafts made from glass, wood, bamboo, ceramics and shells.

Ubud
Ubud is the centre of art in Bali, famous for paintings, and wood carvings. There's a wide variety of shops along the road, selling clothing, antiques, jewellery, home wear and handicrafts. The neighboring villages of Peliatan, Penestanan and Pengosekan are also home to many artists and art galleries.
